useful real world api

API’s are kind of like pathways between systems that allow one to communicate with another.  APIs can allow applications to have access to another systems information, data or services.  For example google maps API allows an app to have access to googles mapping services.    Another example could be a trading API for a stock exchange.  The API would allow program (algorithm) to connect to the exchange and place automated trades.   RESTful APIs can be used to ping a database and return a flat file of the data.
